A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the root is cleaned and sealed. The pulp is the soft area within the root canal. The tooth’s nerve lies within the canal. The nerve is vital to the tooth’s function and health after the tooth has emerged through the gums. Its only function is to provide the sensation of hot or cold. The absence of the root will not affect day to day functioning of the tooth. The root and pulp are removed when either is damaged and bacteria are breeding in the canal.
